THE VIRTUAL LABYRINTH
Imagine there is a pile of fudgy, ultra thick layer of chocolaty brownies with a perfectly wrinkly crust on top emitting hot fumes in front of you. The spoon awaits to dive in whilst the brown chocolate sauce slithers and reigns over the polished white plate. But instead of dissecting it and thrilling your taste buds like a normal person, we take pictures of it with a gazillion filters along with captioning it like #yummy#brownies#treatday#truelove#blah blah blah that will continue till the rest of the page even though everything is pretty evident in the photograph.
The advent of social media has improved our connections and marketing amongst people around the globe. Also it has helped us to stay updated since its arrival but at some point or another we all must have realised how hyped it has become especially amid the youth(Gen Z). I feel it has become a world of lies, pretense just like a virtual labyrinth that we cannot escape. Right now millions and millions of people are sharing their personal information, eccentric selfies and their voguish dance moves on a platform fundamentally made to keep us appraise. It has now become a portal for several criminal activities since, we always update our whereabouts, right?
Influencing, one of the professions on social media has flourished over the last few years as your one like has aided them to generate income. The idea of being an influencer is very polarizing and hence it is blossoming amongst teens to showcase their painstaking job of doing fancy nails, teaching us the art of a messy bun and most notably going thrift shopping which after all is just a business.
Honestly speaking, social media has become more like politics( you follow me and i will follow you, i like your post and u like mine etc) just like a race of addicts to reach the highest number of followers or likes. Now social media has effectively made its way into every classroom, dinner table and workplace. Did you know that is has a hand in increasing eating disorders in teenagers, especially girls? Did you know that it has a strong influence on a person's self confidence towards their body, eating patterns and poor self concept just to attain a perfect physique which might fetch more likes? Cyberbullying, depression, anxiety are just in line which is vacuous and outrageous.
I have no intentions to alarm you, just stating the facts. Today, I stand proud to announce that I am only on Whatsapp (just to stay connected with my amazing readers) and my life is perfectly normal as i ain't missing out anything. Again, i am not asking you to do the same but just try to reduce your levels of addiction by trying to reflect upon your purpose on social media other than killing time.
Lets skip the pretense!
